Music Video Analysis

When analysing a music video you need to examine all four of OCR’s key concepts. Consider the following questions in your PowerPoint when analysing music videos for your research.

Forms and Conventions- What genre/sub-genre can the track be identified as?
- Who directed the video?
- When was the video released?
- What type of music video (concept/narrative/performance) is it?
- What mise-en-scene/editing/camera techniques are used in the video?
- Do the techniques adhere to or subvert the conventions (typical features) of music videos from the same genre/sub-genre?

Representation- How is the artist/group represented in the video?
- What does the mise-en-scene suggest about the artist/group?
- How do camera and editing techniques contribute to the construction of the representation of the artist/group?

Institutions- Which music labels/subsidiaries are the artist/group signed to?
- How much did the video cost to make? What does this tell us about the artist/group label?
- How was the video distributed/consumed?
- Which music channels played the video? What were the reasons for this?

Audiences- Who are the target audience for the video?
- Why would audiences watch the video? Think about the Uses and Gratifications theory (diversion, personal relationships, personal identity, and surveillance).
- Can any other audience theories (feminism, post-feminism, the male gaze) be applied to audience consumption of the video?
- Are there any other pleasure audiences might receive from watching the video?

Assessment Objective 2: Apply knowledge and understanding to show how meanings are created when analysing media products and evaluating own practical work.
